斯坦福·肖于1930年出生在美国。先后在斯坦福和普林斯顿等大学学习伊斯兰史和土耳其史。他长期在哈佛大学、加州大学洛杉矶分校历史系任教，讲授土耳其语和土耳其历史。1999年他受邀到土耳其安卡拉任比尔肯特大学的奥斯曼和土耳其史教授。除了本书外，其主要著作还有：《奥斯曼埃及的财政和行政组织及其发展（1517—1798年）》（1962）、《新与旧之间：塞利姆三世时期的奥斯曼帝国（1789—1807年）》（1971）和五卷本的《从帝国到共和国：土耳其的民族解放战争（1918—1923）》（2001）等。鉴于他对土耳其史研究做出的贡献，斯坦福·肖曾获得土耳其历史协会、美国－土耳其协会授予的“终身成就奖”（1981、1989年）等荣誉称号。
