Beethoven's piano sonatas form one of the most important collections of works in the whole history of music. Spanning several decades of his life as a composer, the sonatas soon came to be seen as the first body of substantial serious works for piano suited to performance in large concert halls seating hundreds of people. 查尔斯•罗森（Charles Rosen，1927—2012），近半个世纪以来影响力最大的音乐学者之一，他的研究重点主要是古典风格音乐与早期浪漫派音乐，相关著作有举世闻名的《古典风格》与《浪漫一代》等。
