作者简介这是法国作家艾尔维·吉贝尔（1955～1991）在死的两年前写的自述。这部书的主题是死亡、艾滋病、同性恋、性虐恋、吸毒和福柯、阿佳尼。艾尔维·吉贝尔是福柯晚年的朋友，他和福柯一样，也死于艾滋病。写这书时，艾尔维·吉贝尔已经知道自己得了艾滋病。他说：“只有当我写作的时候，我才觉得活着”，“写这本书是为了在尊严中死去”。这本书他写得自恋而不动声色，描写艾滋病和性行为也是如此，但让人不寒而栗。他还把自己临死前的日常生活拍了一部记录片《羞耻和无耻》。
艾尔维·吉贝尔是在1981年听朋友说有艾滋病这种疾病的。第二天，他就把此事告诉给福柯，福柯听了笑得直不起腰来，一屁股从沙发上跌坐到地上，他说：“一种只有同性恋才生的癌症，不，怎么可能呢？简直笑死人了！”而福柯并不知道，当时他已经感染了艾滋病，只不过处在潜伏期中。终于，福柯在1983年被确诊得了艾滋病...
