作者简介

Lin Shu, Inc. investigates the dynamic interactions between translation, literary writing, and print culture in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century China. Its focus is a history of the career and works of Lin Shu (also Lin Qin'nan, 1852-1924) and his many collaborators and associates in the commercial publishing, educational, and business worlds. Rather than treat Lin Shu as a quasi-author figure, I take him to be a key member of a larger network of individuals occupied with translation and the remaking of texts from earlier periods of Chinese history---what I call "Lin Shu, Inc." Chapter One provides background for understanding Lin Shu's biography and lays out the basic historiographical issues addressed in the project, including the emergence of translation as a new and important form of intellectual labor in modern China; ancient-style prose (guwen) as a literary phenomenon; and the relations between late Qing and Republican literary production and larger global trends. Chapter Two provides a more detailed history of translation in the late Qing, and offers close readings of two early translations by Lin Shu and his collaborators, versions of Uncle Tom's Cabin and Aesop's Fables. Chapter Three explores the consequences of a counter-intuitive process by which Lin's success as a translator elevated him to the status of an authority in "traditional" literature. With remarkable acuity, Lin and his publishers seized on new forms of print media to exploit his new role, both for profit and for the promotion of their "conservative" cultural agenda. Chapter Four analyzes Lin's conflict with writers and intellectuals of the New Culture and May Fourth movements. Through detailed readings of well-known but little-examined materials, this chapter demonstrates how younger writers' crusades against Lin Shu articulated important new ideas about the relationship between intellectuals, their audiences, and the culture market that remain significant today.
