畢業於加州聖芭芭拉大學英語文學系，目前是自由作家，作品散見《紐約時報》、《華盛頓郵報》、《舊金山紀事報雜誌》、《沙龍》等媒體，寫作題材包括旅遊、藝術、科學與教育。她最初報導偷書賊基奇的文章曾獲選為2007年「美國最佳犯罪報導」。芭雷特與丈夫和兩個小孩住在舊金山。
