作者简介葛瑞汉（1919—1991），当代英国著名汉学家和哲学家。1919年生于威尔士；早年就读于牛津大学；二战期间在英国皇家空军服役，曾在伦敦大学亚非学院接受日语培训，并被派往马来西亚、泰国等地担任日文翻译；退役后重返亚非学院学习中文，1950年毕业后留校任教，1953年获博 士学位，历任讲师，教授；1981年当选为英国学术院院士；1991年病逝。《泰晤士报》称他为：“世界公认的中国哲学和语言研究的重要权威，中国哲学与诗词的天才翻译家，把中国古代的生活理念介绍给西方的杰出阐释者。”
