作者简介柏拉图生于公元前427年，死于公元前347年。“柏拉图”大概是个雅号，古希腊文中的意思是“身体粗壮、结实”。他本名亚里斯托克勒斯。柏拉图出身于雅典一个古老的名门贵族家庭，远祖是雅典最后一个皇帝科德拉斯，他的母亲派里克廷是梭伦的后裔。梭伦在欧洲法律史上是位大名人。他是雅典的执政官，属工商奴隶主阶级的民主派，在执政期间进行了一系列的立法活动，史称“梭伦立法”。这些立法推动了雅典的奴隶主民主政治的发展和商品市场经济的繁荣。柏拉图的父亲亚里斯顿是个民主派，在柏拉图幼小的时候就去世了。柏拉图有两个哥哥、一个姐姐、一个同母异父弟弟。
