夏志清，1921年生于上海浦东，原籍江苏吴县。上海沪江大学英文系毕业。抗战胜利后任教北京大学英文系。1948年考取北大文科留美奖学金赴美深造，1951年获耶鲁大学英文系博士学位。先后执教美国密歇根大学、纽约州立大学、匹兹堡大学等校。1961年任教哥伦比亚大学东方语言文化系，1969年为该校中文教授，1991年荣休后为该校中文名誉教授。现居纽约。

夏志清是西方汉学界研究中国现代文学的先行者和权威。英文代表作《中国现代小说史》在中国现代文学研究上具有开创性的意义。作者以其融贯中西的学识，宽广深邃的批评视野，探讨中国新文学小说创作的发展路向，尤其致力于“优美作品之发现和评审”，发掘并论证了张爱玲、张天翼、钱锤书、沈从文等重要作家的文学史地位，使此书成为西方研究中国现代文学史的经典之窗，影响深远。
