作者简介萨尔曼·拉什迪（Salman Rushdie），1947年生于印度孟买一个中产阶级家庭。祖父是一位乌尔都语诗人，父亲则是剑桥大学商业系的毕业生。14岁时，他被送到英国的格拉比学校读书。1964年他的父亲搬到巴基斯坦的卡拉奇居住，那时候正值印巴战争。拉什迪继续在剑桥大学三一学院求学，攻读历史。
复杂的宗教、文化和社会背景，注定了他对“历史”、“政治”、“流亡”、“移民”、“混杂”、“文化翻译”、“边缘写作”等问题的热切关注。
1981年，文学天赋出众的拉什迪凭借第二部小说《午夜之子》获得了当年英国文坛最高奖项“布克奖”，却因作品触怒了印度前总理英迪拉·甘地而被印度当局禁止在国内发行。此后，其小说《羞耻》又因中伤巴基斯坦前总统齐亚·哈克以及著名的布托家族，而导致该书不仅在巴基斯坦遭禁，他本人也被指控犯有诽谤罪。
