After the death of his own father, Auster discovers a 60-year-old family murder mystery that could account for the old man's elusive character. Later the book shifts from Auster's identity as son to his own role as father.

作者简介

保罗·奥斯特（Paul Auster），1947生于纽约。小说家、诗人、翻译家和电影编剧。曾和王颖合导电影《烟》。《纽约时报》曾将他形容为“穿上胶鞋的卡夫卡”。其作品《纽约三部曲》、《孤独及其所创造的》曾引起文坛热烈讨论，作品中接合了欧洲风味的前卫、感性，笔端带点忧郁，文体清澈，并擅用嘲讽式的象征主义。此外，他经常运用文学游戏使故事生动，并在每一本新书中鞭策自己彻底重塑风格，是勇于创新的当代作家之一。
