彼得‧霍普柯克曾在独立电视新闻（ITN）做了两年记者，后在《泰晤士报》工作了近二十年，后期主要是作为中东及远东事务专家。他曾在国王非洲步枪团服役，与后来的乌干达独裁者、当时的一等兵伊迪‧阿明在一个营。他也曾经历险境，曾在古巴和中东两次被秘密警察拘禁，还被阿拉伯恐怖分子劫持过。他的作品被翻译成了十四种文字。1999年他被英国皇家亚洲事务学会授予珀西‧塞克斯爵士纪念勋章。
